Economic Mobility in Charlotte: Data, Barriers, and Policy Implications
An examination of economic mobility trends in Charlotte, leveraging data from Opportunity Insights to understand systemic barriers and inform policy interventions in urban contexts.
In 2014, Charlotte was ranked last in economic mobility among America’s 50 largest cities. As a result, Opportunity Insights, Leading on Opportunity, Foundation For The Carolinas, The Gambrell Foundation, and other local organizations partnered to launch the Charlotte Opportunity Initiative, an effort to further explore Charlotte’s data to better understand the barriers many face.
On Nov. 19, 2020, we hosted a virtual presentation of the new report detailing updated findings on the state of economic mobility in Charlotte/Mecklenburg County. The event included a conversation with our partners to discuss policy implications and next steps.
