Ibram X. Kendi & Mayor Brandon Johnson: The Anti-Democratic Age and the 'Great Replacement Theory'

Author; Mayor of Chicago

1:01:41·2026·undergraduate level·Public Colloquium

Ibram X. Kendi discusses the historical lineage and contemporary manifestations of the 'great replacement theory,' analyzing its role in fostering antidemocratic movements and outlining potential pathways toward liberation from authoritarianism, drawing on his work in "Chain of Ideas."

Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, international bestselling author and winner of the National Book Award, joins us to discuss how the “great replacement theory” — the baseless concept that Black and Brown communities will “replace” white populations — has ushered us into an antidemocratic age in the name of preventing demographic change. In his newest work Chain of Ideas, Dr. Kendi offers us an unsettling yet indispensable global history of how we landed in this authoritarian era, while simultaneously giving us hope for how we can free ourselves from it.
