India-Japan Defence Partnership: Emergence, Limitations, and Prospects

Faculty & Visiting Speaker, University of Chicago

1:27:19·2026·graduate level·Research Seminar

A panel discussion exploring the strategic underpinnings and evolving dynamics of the India-Japan defence partnership amidst the shifting geopolitical landscape of the Indo-Pacific.

About the Online Panel Discussion The online panel discussion aims to understand the emerging strategic and defence relationship between India and Japan against the background of the fast-evolving geopolitical and security situation in the Indo-Pacific. The India-Japan defence partnership has a powerful strategic logic in balancing China and deep roots in bilateral mechanisms and agreements and in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue. Most importantly, it has enormous potential. Nevertheless, the relationship has remained relatively limited. Recently, Tokyo and New Delhi have accelerated the development of their defence partnership during the summer visit of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi to India. The visits produced important outcomes such as a Memorandum of Arrangement on Maritime Security Cooperation, a push for cooperation in shipbuilding and in joint development and manufacturing, and steps toward greater military technology cooperation.
